synagogue is not just a place to pray," he said. He also plans to talk to the congregation about what it should look for during the Torah reading and hold a dis- cussion afterward. In addi- tion to his new position, which began earlier this month, Rab- bi Tolwin will continue as the educational director of Aish HaTorah. Young Israel of West Bloom- field, which occupies a store- front on Farmington and Maple roads, has been without a rabbi since the synagogue was established five years ago. Before Young Israel of West Bloomfield moved to their cur- rent location last April, services were held in the basement of Sinai Hospital's Health Center across the street. William Leuchter, president of Young Israel of West Bloom- field, said the congregation de- cided to hire Rabbi Tolwin because of his "dynamic per- / Att Corner of Pontiac Trail & S. Commerce Rds. The syna- gogue currently has a membership of 22 families. "I want this shul to be a mir- acle mission," Rabbi Tolwin said. "I want it to be so appeal- ing and attractive and the ser- vice to be inspiring and the educational program to be en- lightening enough for people to want to bring their friends. I want it to be a grass-roots shul where people feel ownership." Young Israel of West Bloom- . field is one of four relatively new Orthodox synagogues in West Bloomfield, and Dr. Leuchter feels confident the community is "demographical- ly bound to expand" and will be able to support the synagogue. `The Orthodox population in West Bloomfield seems to be growing because people are moving in from out-of-town and > from other neighborhoods," Rabbi Tolwin said. Before coming to Aish Ha- Torah, Rabbi Tolwin taught in Jerusalem for 10 years. In 1980 he was co-principal of a north- ern California yeshiva and from 1981-82 he taught at Bais Yaacov in Detroit. He also spent some time working in the field of computers. • He recently moved to West • Bloomfield and on March 13 he will be getting married to Cana- dian Chaya Sara Brand. *1 04 44: 1 ribbed undershirts leggy skirts crinkle dresses ...
