HIGHWAY LOSSES
Riding a motorcycle may be injurious to
health in ways not previously suspected. Any-
one who has driven a motorcycle for any pe-
riod of time can attest to the fact that some
of the street noise remains in the head for a
while after the ride has stopped. Now, an on-
going English study of 180 motorcyclists con-
firms that hearing loss may accompany
motorcycle ownership. More than half of those
motorcyclists tested showed signs of hearing
loss, despite the fact that all regularly wore pro-
tective helmets. Twenty percent of those test-
ed displayed hearing losses so significant that
they were unable to understand quiet conver-
sation. To protect against such losses, mo-
torcyclists are encouraged to wear ear plugs
along with their helmets.
