Ms. Levy said parental reac- tions to their children's rela- tionships run the gamut from complete disapproval to whole- hearted encouragement. "Some parents want rela- tionships for their children; they feel they'd be happier, especial- ly parents who are getting old- er themselves," she said. "Oth- er parents don't want their children hurt or taken advan- tage of, so they don't encourage them to have relationships." Some parents make objec- tions for the same reasons par- ents of non-handicapped people oppose their children's partners, such as religious differences or personality clashes. "Our clients may need more support and guidance, but the issues really aren't that differ- ent — they just need to be ap- proached in a different way," Ms. Levy said. Part ofJARC's Independent Living Program includes sup- port and information about sex, birth control, sexually trans- mitted diseases and other re- lated topics. Social workers and counselors work with clients on an individual basis according to need. "We don't offer judgment; we offer information, choices and options," said Ms. Levy. "In a society where more relation- ships are dysfunctional than functional, I think in our popu- lation its the reverse — maybe because the support is there."
