Fried also was named to the All-Oakland County team by the Oakland Press. Fried started at free safety for three years for Berkley. On offense, he filled in at quarter- back, running back and wide receiver. Last fall, the team tri-captain was credited with 52 first hits and 28 assists for 80 total tackles, an average of more than 11 per game. He also had two interceptions. When pressed into action on the other side of the line of scrimmage, Fried threw for two touchdown passes at quarter- back and he caught 18 aerials for 158 yards and six scores. During his career, Fried had 182 tackles and he picked off a dozen enemy passes. Fried isn't a big guy (he's a 6- foot, 175-pounder) and he'd be the first to tell you he's not the most talented player around. But he parlayed desire, inten- sity and football smarts into a monster gridiron career at Berkley. "Intensity and violence. That's what football boils down to, and that's the way I played," Fried said. "I also tried very hard to be a smart player. I studied a lot of game films. More high school players should do that." Berkley went 6-3 in Fried's junior and senior years. Those were the first back-to-back win- ning records for the Bears in more than 40 seasons. Coach Pat Fox knows exactly what role Fried played in the history- and it was terrible to see that he was hurt. "I give Ryan all the credit in the world for what he's done since that night. He's looked at the injury and its ramifications very maturely. Whatever hap- pens from here on out, I think Ryan is going to be a great suc- cess in life." Fried's parents are Fred and Janice Steinhardt. His sister, Karle Fried, 20, a student at Michigan State University, was a two-time All-Southeastern Michigan Association singles tennis player at Berkley High. 111 B'nai B'rith Basketball B'nai B'rith Men's Bowling Scores A LEAGUE Centennial 11 4-1, Pisgah 4-1, Detroit II 3-2, Detroit I 4-2, Brotherhood III 1-4. "Ryan was one of the leaders of a group of kids that turned our program around," Fox said. "He's a good athlete who made himself into a great player. Ryan is exactly the type of kid you want in your program. He's a solid player, student and teammate." Berkley athletic director Bob Gershman was watching the homecoming game along the sidelines when Fried was injured. "It literally happened at my feet," Gershman said.
