Those who suffer from tinnitus (ringing in
the ears) are likely to find that ft has a disqui-
eting effect on their lives. Some creatively cope
with their problem, while others are led to trag-
ic distraction. Francisco de Goya, the great
Spanish painter, was plagued by an incessant
roar in his head after becoming deaf in 1793.
Fortunately for him, he was able to channel his
torment into his angst-ridden paintings. The
19th-century British physician and father of
otology (the study of hearing disorders),
Joseph Toynebee, was not so fortunate. He
died after inhaling chloroform in a desperate
attempt to relieve his tinnitus. Today, tinnitus
sufferers can avail themselves of the technol-
ogy of masking devices which may effective-
ly drown out the offending noises in their heads.

As part of its ongoing re-
search, the Simon Wiesenthal
Center is interested in hear-
ing from individuals who may
have information about Dr.
Hermann Maas, a pastor from
Heidelberg, Germany, during
the Nazi era.
