FEBRUARY

Nation of Islam, then led by Eli-
jah Mohammed, espoused a
separatism and hatred of
whites that appealed to young
blacks in urban ghettos in the
1960s. Malcolm was the Na-
tion's most effective preacher
and recruiter. He appealed to
young ghetto blacks by preach-
ing self-determination and vio-
lence, if necessary, to achieve
liberation. He also denounced
traditional black politicians who
were dependent on white sup-
port as collaborators who had
sold out their people.
Since the most prominent
white allies of established black
politicians were typically Jews,
Malcolm's rhetoric often con-
tained anti-Semitic or anti-Zion-
ist references. The latter were
important because black lead-
ers had often voiced support for
Israel to win the backing ofJew-
ish organizations for their own
objectives. By attacking Israel,
Malcolm underscored the dif-
ference between himself and
these "kept" blacks. This same
tactic was imitated by Mal-
colm's successor, Louis Far-
rakhan, who first achieved
notoriety in 1984 by referring
to Judaism as a "gutter reli-
gion."
Jesse Jackson's use of anti-
Semitic rhetoric during his
presidential campaign 10 years
ago, plus his refusal to disavow
Mr. Farrakhan's more vicious
anti-Semitism, can be under-
stood in similar terms. Mr.
Jackson was struggling to be-
come the dominant force with-
in the black community.
Anti-Semitic remarks let him
distinguish himself from estab-
lished black politicians and or-
ganization leaders who were
often politically linked or fi-
nancially reliant upon Jews.
Recently, Mr. Jackson —
and, to a lesser degree, Mr. Far-
rakhan — have found it expe-
dient to seek respectability (and
enhanced access to private and
public funds) — by toning down
their rhetoric. Yet, blacks are
likely to continue to use anti-Se-
mitic rhetoric and activities. Af-
firmative action programs have
helped create a new stratum of
black professionals with elite
credentials. Unfortunately, the
interests of this new, stratum
are likely to clash with those of
Jews. For both groups, the pub-
lic and quasi-public sectors, in-
cluding universities, are
important venues within which
to acquire position, status and
influence. It would not be sur-
prising if members of this group
used anti-Semitic appeals as a
way to expand their own influ-
ence at the expense of Jews.
Jewish support for civil rights
will then have had the ironic re-
sult of helping create an influ-
ential stratum of blacks who
will find a posture of anti-Semi-
tism politically useful. El
