Beth El
Hosts Lobenthal

Richard H. Lobenthal, Michi-
gan director of the Anti-
Defamation League, will be the
guest speaker at the 8 p.m.
Brotherhood Shabbat Service
at Temple Beth El, Feb. 25. His
topic, "Are Jews in Danger," is
reflective of his tenure with
ADL.
Since coming to Michigan,
Mr. Lobenthal has served both
as director of the state offices
and, from 1986-1991, as Mid-
west area director. In addition,
Mr. Lobenthal has served on
the sociology faculties of Wayne
State University, the Universi-
ty of Michigan and the Univer-
sity of Detroit. Founder and
past president of the Ecumeni-
cal Institute for Jewish-Chris-
tian Studies and a founding
member of the Michigan Coali-
tion for Human Rights, Mr.
Lobenthal serves on many com-
munity boards and is a civil
rights commentator on WDET-
FM.

On Feb. 25, Temple Israel will
hold its annual Teachers' Sab-
bath honoring the teaching staff
of its various departments and
branches. Frances B. Pearlman,
director of education, will rec-
ognize all the teachers and their
contribution to Jewish educa-
tion.
The following teachers are
the recipients of honor awards:
for five years of service — Eric
Brodsky; for 10 years of service
— Joan Redisch, Sara Skoczy-
las, David Techner, Barbara
Zack; for 15 years of service —
Glenda Lask; for 25 years of ser-
vice — Rita Abramson; for 30
years of service — Margie

Adat Shalom Synagogue will
mark Purim this year with a
week of education, outreach to
those less fortunate and cele-
brations highlighted by a Mega-
Megillah evening for the family.
Sisterhood will share the
spirit of Purim with fellow Jews
from Jewish Vocational Service
and Kadima at its annual So-
nia Knopper Purim Outreach
Luncheon 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21.
Included are a musical perfor-
mance by Cantor Howard
Glantz, songs by the Adat
Shalom Nursery School chil-
dren, and a welcome from Rab-
bi Efry Spectre. The Hillel Day
School eighth grade class will
help to serve the guests.

The nursery school will cre-
ate Purim Pizazz with parades
and mini-carnivals on Feb. 22
and 25.
The entire congregation is in-
vited to the Mega-Megillah, be-
ginning with a casual supper at
5:45 p.m. Feb. 24. There will be
an expanded megillah reading
by synagogue teen-agers, along
with Purim spiels, songs, games
and presentations by Adat
Shalom Religious School and
Hillel Day School youngsters.
A special storytelling and pup-
pet program with storyteller
Laura Pershin is on tap for the
younger children, who will re-
join their parents following a
costume parade toward the end
of the megillah reading. The
evening will be capped off by the
drawing for the synagogue's an-
nual Purim fund-raiser and
hamantaschen for all!
At 7:30 a.m. Feb. 25, the
megillah will be read once again
by the Adat Shalom teens. They
include: Jason Miller (12th
grade), Aaron Weiss, Gabe Ru-
bin, Sara Biederman, Jason
Miller, Aaron Goodman,
Michael Schostak, Owen Alter-
man and Jeremy Gordon.
Feb. 27 will start off with
"Back to Shushan," a creative
morning beginning at 9 a.m. for
religious school students and
their families. The Youth De-
partment's annual Purim Car-
nival will run from 11 a.m. to 2
p.m. featuring games, prizes,
food and costume contests. The
community is invited to the car-
nival. Admission is free.

Beth El
Purim Dinner

Temple Beth El members will
greet Purim with revelry, a
reading of the megillah, cos-
tumed clergy and congregants.
Preceding the megillah reading
at 7:15 p.m. in the sanctuary,
members will gather for a fam-
ily dinner at 6 p.m.
There is a charge for the din-
ner and reservations are nec-
essary. For information, call the
temple, 851-1100.

Rabbi Talks
On Humanism

Rabbi Sherwin Wine will de-
scribe the philosophy and the
programs of the Birmingham
Temple and of Humanistic Ju-
daism 7:30 p.m. March 2 and
April 6 in the temple library.
