Dr. Avraham Avi hai

-

Dr. Avi-hai, author of the
new Danger! Three Jewish
Peoples, was in Detroit last
week, a guest of the Detroit
chapter of the American
Friends of the Hebrew Univer-
sity. A native of Canada who
now serves as a Jerusalem-
based consultant, Dr. Avi-hai
said he became concerned about
Jewish divisiveness when he
saw his own daughters "having
absolutely nothing in common
with their first cousins in Cana-
da."
During his frequent travels
between Israel and the Unit-
ed States, Dr. Avi-hai said, he
came to see the Jewish people
as three distinct groups: a Di-
aspora Jewry, which models it-
self on American culture; Israeli
society, where life — even for
those who are not religious —
is based on the Jewish calen-
dar; and the right-wing Ortho-
dox, who want little to do with
any Jewish community other
than their own.
He wrote Danger! Three Jew-
ish Peoples, he said, to "sound
an alarm, to say, 'Listen, we're
losing our unity."
Dr. Avi-hai worries that a
number of American Jews

are poorly educated Jewishly
and celebrate Christmas and
Easter — Christian holidays
that have somehow come to
be considered "American"
— with more regularity
than they do Passover and
Rosh Hashanah. They have lit-
tle real understanding of
Israeli life and merge into
American culture with ease, he
said.
"Once, to stop being a Jew re-
quired an overt act of ab-
dication or conversion," he
said. "Now, it means you
just don't do anything
Jewish.
"To be a Jew in the Di-
aspora today is to want to
be a Jew. It is an act of
will."
Life in Israel operates
very differently, he said.
There, even the Jew
who has no interest what-
soever in religion would
have a difficult time find-
ing a store open on Yom
Kippur. His main secular
holidays are Yom Ha'atz-
maut, Israel Indepen-
dence Day, and Yom
Yerushalyim.
Dr. Avi-hai said he
doesn't expect American
Jews to become religious
overnight or anticipate
every U.S. Jew will make
aliyah next month.
"But there needs to be some-
thing Jewish in your home;
there has to be a Jewish core,"
he said. "There also has to be
self-study. A conscious, secular
anti-religious Jews who comes
out of learning is a person with
whom you can dialogue.

"To be a Jew
in the Diaspora
requires an act
of will."

Avraham Avi-hai

"It's not a question of obser-
vance, but of knowing, of want-
ing to learn," he added. "I'm
angry that Jews don't treasure
the richness we have."
Dr. Avi-hai said one way to
heal the growing division be-
tween American Jews and Is-
raelis is to send more Diaspora
teens to Israel. He also believes
strongly that Jews outside of Is-
rael should learn Hebrew,
