In Los Angeles,
More Than Freeways
Was Split Apart
In Los Angeles, a great deal more than
freeways was shattered. The pattern of
people's lives was disrupted, their homes,
belongings and Jobs were destroyed, and in
some cases, life itself came to an end. The
large Jewish community in the affected areas
was particularly hard hit.
The Council of Jewish Federations has
established the
CJF Earthquake Emergency Fund
to work with the
Jewish Federation Council of
Greater Los Angeles to bring emergency
assistance to those in need and to help
rebuild Jewish institutions.
Your local Federation has also established an
Earthquake Fund and will forward its
proceeds to the CJF Fund for
transmission to Los Angeles.

10-year-old Continues
Swimming Success
A
ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR
dam Farber has swum
his way out of Michigan.
The
10-year-old
swimming phenom from
West Bloomfield has had to
travel out of state on weekends
to find tougher competition. His
parents have taken him to
Cleveland and Bowling Green,
Ohio, Indianapolis and Mil-
waukee, and the results have
been eye-opening.
In Milwaukee two weeks ago,
Adam won the high-point tro-
phy in his 10-and-under age
group by winning two events,
placing second in three, and
adding third- and fourth-place
finishes. He had personal bests
in the
50-yard freestyle (27.94), 100
free (1:00.42), 50 back (33.06)
and 200-yard individual med-
ley (2:28.09).
The Milwaukee meet drew
5,500 entries from 12 states.
Adam is pointing toward the
U.S. Swimming state finals the
first weekend in March at Mid-
land. In that meet, he will swim
in the 12-and-under division.
Adam and his sisters, Cheri,
13, and Shayna, 6, swim for the
