New York Yeshiva University
Museum opened three new ex-
hibitions highlighting the con-
trasts and confluences of Jewish
culture.
"The Sacred Hebrew Let-
ters," Charles M. Stern's exhi-
bition of sculpted Texas cream
limestone, explores both the
form and the unique meaning
of the Hebrew alphabet, bring-
ing together the key elements
of culture and communication.
On exhibit through July 1994,
Mr. Stern's sculptures are in-
spired by passages in the kab-
balah, Jewish mystical writ-
ings.
"Israeli Street Talk: A Stroll
on the Lighter Side," presents
a panoply of street life, a cease-
less theater of humor, oddity,
zaniness and occasional hap-
penings. Some of the images are
so poignant that they cling to
one's soul long after the viewer
has moved on. Photographer Cy
Lehrer, a native of Tucson,

the Generations," Judith Wein-
stein's Cibachrome prints of
Beta Israel emigres, are on view
through July, complementing
the museum's current exhibi-
tion, "Faith and Survival:
Ethiopian Jewish Life 1983-
1992." Ms. Weinstein's photos
pick up where this story leaves
off: after the arrival of the
Ethiopian Jews in Israel.
Yeshiva University Museum,
a teaching museum whose pur-
pose is to preserve, enrich and
interpret Jewish life as it is re-
flected in the arts, history and
sciences, is at 2520 Amsterdam
Avenue at West 185th Street in
Manhattan. It is open Tuesday
through Thursday, 10:30 a.m.
to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6
p.m.
