Jerusalem — Researchers from
Israel, Egypt and Germany are
working on a three-way re-
search project involving the
genetic development of small
broilers with less feathers that
will be able to thrive in hot cli-
mates. Chickens suffer from
high temperatures in the sum-
mer, resulting in less efficient
utilization of food and a slower
rate of growth.
In hot countries, one can find
varieties of chickens with less
feathers that are better able to
cope with extreme heat. The
overall genetic quality of these
chickens, however, is far inferi-
or to those more commony bred
in the modem poultry industry.
Heading the researchers in
Israel is Professor Avigdor Ca-
haner at the Hebrew Universi-
ty's Faculty of Agriculture in
Rehovot. The German partner
is Professor Peter Horst of the
Technical University of Berlin,
and the Egyptian counterpart
is Professor }Carnal Saleh of the
University of Tanta.
Professor Cahaner and his
colleagues are experimenting
with genes that affect feather
growth in order to develop broil-
ers that retain good genetic
characteristics while at the
same time have a greater abil-
ity to withstand heat.
Within the framework of this
project, the Israeli researchers
have sent some 1,600 chicks to
the Egyptian scientists for ex-
perimentation and observation.

IMF Suggests Tax
System Adoption

Palestinians in the autonomous
areas should adopt a tax system
similar to Israel's, an Interna-
tional Monetary Fund (IMF)
special delegation recommend-
ed in a technical assistance re-
port on taxation and budgeting
for the territories.
According to State Revenues
Director Yoram Gabbai, the
IMF delegation suggested that
the Palestinians collect the
same value added taxes (VAT)
and customs, using the meth-
ods and rates prevailing in
Israel.
