Prepared to be the Best - • IMIIII PERFORMANCE page 67 41 , 4 "All the time I was in school, I was playing professionally," he said. He continues to prac- tice four hours a day. "I started teaching before I finished my degree credits, so when I was done with school it was just a matter of continuing what I was doing. "After I got my master's de- gree, I moved to Germany and again was teaching and per- forming. I had a girlfriend who eventually became my wife (Andrea Mensch, an English teacher), and she was German. Her family had been living here, and they moved back. "She asked me if I wanted to go back with her, and I did that. After two years, I felt I wasn't getting where I wanted to be as a performer, and I thought I'd give the United States a try again. I came back here and started getting established." "The toughest thing is sitting and practicing and envisioning how I want an audience to feel and how I'm going to commu- nicate that," he said. "It's im- possible to know if others are going to get my message until I actually perform. "Because classical music is not part of the mass media, it is not instantly understandable. People are not bombarded with it as they are with rock music. They are used to passive lis- tening, and classics requiring active listening. "I've often put pieces in my programs thinking the audience might find them boring because they're kind of complicated, but I've been surprised to find en- thusiastic reactions." One of Mr. Eisenstein's up- and-coming students is his 4- year-old son, Alexander, who is starting to learn the piano at the same age his father began. If the youngster continues, he will hear the advice his dad gives to more advanced pupils. "On whatever level students are, I try to show them the whole picture of what they're doing, the whole feeling of what- ever piece they're playing," he said. "I don't want them to just read the notes correctly." Brunch with the Classics is presented from noon-2 p.m. Sundays at the Somerset Col- lection rotunda in Troy.
