percent of the gentile popula-
tion). That number jumped to
13.8 percent in early post-World
War II (8.8 percent of the gen-
tile population) and to the high
of 45.8 percent, recorded in
1990.
"From the time of the immi-
grant generation a century ago
to the present, there has been
an explosion of achievement
among American Jews," said
Professor Cheswick.
"This has not been limited to
the Jewish Nobel laureates or
the 'captains of industry.' It has
rather been a very broad-based
achievement encompassing the
community as a whole."
This inclination for education
may hold Jews in good stead as
America restructures from a
manufacturing to a service
economy and emerges from the
current recession.
Said Ms. Nurengberg, "Many
JVS' clients need to find new
ways of using their skills as
they cannot replace their jobs
in kind. This does not always
require more formal schooling,
but when it does, we find they
are open to training."
For Jewish women, though,
the workplace is a double-edged
sword, say the experts.
In Jewish culture, the tradi-
tional view is that the distaff
members of the family are to be
provided for by the males. But
Jewish daughters also have the
advantage of seeing the accom-
plishments of their fathers/un-
cles/brothers and emulating
them, said Hasia Diner, a pro-
fessor at the University of
Maryland's Department of
American Studies.
"Jewish women have tradi-
tionally entered into the same
fields as Jewish men," Profes-
sor Diner said. "The women
who benefited most from the
opening of law schools were
Jewish women."
However, the exodus of Jew-
ish women into the marketplace
is straining the resources of the
Jewish community. Professor
Diner pointed out, "As Jewish
women become more involved
in careers, there is an impact
due to the erosion of voluntary
labor performed by women's or-
ganizations and temple sister-
hoods that are the backbone of
the community."
Professor Cheswick said the
secret of the Jewish success sto-
ry lies in the linking of family,
religion and culture. But like
Professor Diner, he also recog-
nizes the present-day assault
on these backbones of success.
"Each of these dimensions of
Jewish life has been subject to
much challenge from without
as well as within," he said. "The
second century of the American
Jewish experience will reveal
how successful in the economic
sphere the Jewish community
has been in meeting these chal-
lenges." CI
