All volunteers for the Allied
Jewish Campaign are invited
to hear two speakers who will
relate dramatic stories of the
Holocaust and Operation Exo-
dus and the rescue of the Jews
of the former Soviet Union Feb.
21-22 at the Max M. Fisher
Building.
Shalmi Barmore, director of
the Center for Teaching the
Holocaust at Yad Vashem in
Jerusalem, will speak about the
background used for the Steven
Spielberg film Schindler's List
Feb. 21. Dr. Tankred Golenpol-
sky, chairman of Moscow's Jew-
ish community, will describe
the situation on the ground for
Jews readying to leave the for-
mer Soviet Union Feb. 22.
Both programs will begin
with dinner at 6 p.m., followed
buy a Campaign phonathon,
which provides an opportunity
to reach out to individuals in the
Detroit community and tell
them about the community-
wide effort.
Mr. Barmore, who is one of
Israel's younger generation of
Holocaust historians, was
among the first scholars called
upon to teach the Holocaust to
today's children. He established
a special teaching center at Yad
Vashem which is visited by
thousands of students and
teachers yearly. The center also
sends teams to schools through-
out the world to help them de-
velop appropriate curricula for
their students.
Dr. Golenpolsky, who also is
editor of Moscow's Jewish
Gazette, was born in Shanghai
and immigrated to Russia with

Leonid Levin, chair of the Jew-
ish Organizations and Jewish
Communities of Belorussia and
chair of the Minsk Jewish Com-
munity, will be the guest speak-
er at a special breakfast 9:30
a.m. Feb. 13 at Temple Beth El.
The breakfast, sponsored by
the Social Action and Family to
Family committees and broth-
erhood of Temple Beth El, will
afford the community an op-
portunity to learn the status of
Russian Jews from a man who
represents 300,000-400,000
Jews in Belorussia as well as
the 40,000-50,000 Jews of Min-
sk. An architect whose most fa-
mous work is the memorial at
Khatyn commemorating the de-
struction of the cities of Be-
lorussia during World War II,
Mr. Levin is in the United
States to attend the World Jew-
ish Congress in Washington,
D.C. Following the conference,
he will be in Detroit to observe
our Jewish community and to
use it as a role model for devel-
oping Jewish communal struc-
tures for Jews throughout
Russia.
The breakfast and program
are open to the community
without a charge. ❑

dence program with Rabbi
Nathan T. Lopes Cardozo Feb.
18-March 18.
Rabbi Cardozo, one of Israel's
leading scholars and writers,
was born in Holland. He has a
Ph.D. and also received his
master's from the University of
Holland, in the field of philos-
ophy. He received his rabbini-
cal training at England's
Gateshead Talmudical Acad-
emy. Rabbi Cardozo is a senior
lecturer at Ohr Somayach/
Tanenbaum College and ad-
dresses international audiences
on philosophy, ethics and
morality.
