Black Anti-Semitism
Has Its Precedents

Jews have served as useful
monsters to various propagan-
da machines. The Catholic
Church made extensive use of
the demonization of the Jews.
Massacres and expulsions fol-
lowed. The National Socialist
Party of Germany made Jews
and their extermination the
theme of their ideology.
The nation of Islam and its
leader, Louis Farrakhan, are re-
lying upon a time-tested for-

ish News and the Jewish Com-
munity Center.
Implicit in the title is the
opinion that heterosexuals are
not blessed and perhaps, even
cursed.
I have no doubts that had a
group announced an event ti-
tled `Twice Blessed: Jewish and
Straight," that PFLAG, SIM-
CHA and the usual letter-writ-
ers would have condemned it as
"heterosexist," "intolerant" and
"bigoted." I suppose that intol-
erance and bigotry are not is-
sues of concern when it is
heterosexuals who are being
maligned.
It seems to me that the se-
lection of this title was an in-
tentional, in-your-face decision,
chosen specifically to assert the
gay-activist position that not
only is the gay lifestyle no less
valid than that of heterosexu-
als, but that it is actually of
greater value and blessed.
That the organizers chose to
describe as blessed something
that the Torah prohibits can
only be characterized as in-
tending to offend the deeply-
held convictions of those Jews
who value the Torah and what
it teaches.

The fire at Northgate (Jewish
News, Jan. 14) affected many.
But we were not forgotten. Do-
nations from the Red Cross,
schools, public and private
agencies came in abundance.
We'd like to give kudos, in
print, to the heroes at our apart-
ment complex and a private cit-
izen, too.
We got out of the building
due to neighbors who ran into
a burning building. They
knocked on the doors of each
floor shouting, "Fire, get out.
Fire, get out." They literally
saved our lives.
Stressed out without our be-
longings and needing to replace
our charred possessions, an-
other hero donated furniture
and food in excess.
After the cinders had fallen,
excavators risked their lives
also. They did it by tiptoeing on
what was left of our floors.
What could be salvaged was re-
turned to us. We give our
thanks to you.
Not to be left out, donations
from the Red Cross, Jewish
Family Service, Kadima,
friends, and coworkers really
boosted our spirits and kept us
on our feet emotionally and
physically. And, of course, our
families.
Thank God they were there.
We are eternally grateful.

mula by selecting Jews as
targets of their propaganda.
The first step is religious or po-
litical demonization of the Jews.
This provides false explanations
for real problems. The next step
is violence against the Jews,
which offers an outlet for accu-
mulated rage for the frustrated
masses.
The American black com-
munity offers a fertile soil for
the growth of anti-Semitism.
Black Rage is a title of a book
written by an African-Ameii-
can psychiatrist; it described a
powerful force. The Rev. Jesse
Jackson tried gingerly to direct
this rage toward the Jews in the
1980s. He was too subtle to suc-
ceed.
Anti-Semitism as a propa-
ganda vehicle is not for the
faint-hearted. The angry and
frustrated masses need hate
mongering and battle cries.
"The Jews are the devils!"
"Kill the devils!" is the motto of
all the successful anti-Semitic
movements.
As a Holocaust survivor who
has supported the civil rights
struggle of the African Ameri-
cans, I am saddened by black
anti-Semitism. As a psychiatrist
and a scientific investigator of
violence, I am alarmed by the
propaganda of Mr. Farrakhan
and his supporters.
I am also old enough to re-
member the indifference of the
"good people" when faced with
a "bizarre" rhetoric of Adolph
