FEBRU AR Y

Maybe it was the memory of
the simple, peaceful past that
led Israelis to look around for
the demon causing all the pan-
ic. Permissive parents, undisci-
plined schooling and heavy
metal music were blamed; the
debate at times sounded like
something out of a '50s rock 'n'
roll movie.
But since Israelis like to
think of themselves as up-to-
date, they focused on violence
in television, movies and videos.
Wrestling was singled out as
the worst culprit, as "WWF"
(World Wrestling Federation)
became an abbreviation for
something evil in the air, and
the Education Committee de-
manded the show be taken off
the screen. Cable TV companies
gave into political pressure and
agreed to warn viewers about
especially violent movies.
The Herzliya Pituach killings
set off a particular category of
cliched response to youth vio-
lence: since the murders took
place in a wealthy setting and
one of the accused boys is a
lawyer's son, it was posited that
money must be at fault. Israeli
parents spent too much time on
their careers and too little on
their children, it was said. The
kids got everything too easily;
they became jaded; they've lost
all values and now they're
shooting cab drivers in the
head, went a popular line of rea-
soning.
Some commentators, howev-
er, kept their heads. "Compared
to other countries, we do not
have that many incidents of
murder," said Yael Hessin, a
Hebrew University criminolo-
gist. "It's true that we have vi-
olence, and even a culture of
violent speech, but from there
to murder is a very long dis-
tance."
Philosopher Yeshayahu Lei-
bowitz, ordinarily a merciless
critic of Israeli society, pointed
out that what happened in Her-
zliya Pituach could and has
happened in other countries. He
also noted that Israelis seemed
to be in shock because it's hard
for them to believe that Jewish
boys from decent homes could
do such a thing.
"We think that we are some-
how different from other human
beings," he said. "We are not dif-
ferent from other human beings
in any way. We also have mur-
derers in our midst."
Among average Israelis, how-
ever, proportion and perspec-
tive were not found in large
quantities. Hysterical thinking
was.
There was an epidemic of
teen-age crime sweeping the
country, a lot of people con-
cluded. The most often-heard
comment was, "It's becoming
just like America here." EJ
