Undercurrent
In Editorial

I found some aspects of your
Jan. 28 Farrakhan editorial dis-
appointing.
From the outset, and without
reservation, what was said by
the Nation of Islam aide was
not acceptable in any form or
fashion. However, the demand
for reparations by some Jewish
groups for the evil words of mar-
ginal leaders in the black com-
munity requires of every black
person in constructive leader-
ship a standard that is not com-
mensurate in the Jewish
community.
Should Jewish leaders repu-
diate every Jew for uttering the
word schvartze, or the actions
of Professor Michael Levin, the
Anti-Defamation League intel-
ligence gathering, the Jewish
student at University of Penn-
sylvania? All reprehensible ac-
tions but where does it end?
Quid pro quo will inflame both
communities.
Your recommendation that
the Black Caucus should not
discontinue their partnership
with the Nation of Islam is pa-
tronizing and foolish. The goals
of this collaboration clearly out-
weigh the speech of a bigot.

Local Needs
Vs. Overseas

Your editorial of Feb. 4 calls for
a dramatic change in the allo-
cation of Allied Jewish Cam-
paign dollars.
On Jan. 25, the Jewish Fed-
eration Board of Governors vot-
ed to make a gradual shift in its
local/overseas allocations over
the next three years to provide
additional dollars for local
needs, including programs di-
rected at Jewish identity and
continuity.
In the editorial, you referred
to the current Allied Jewish
Campaign allocation to our lo-
cal agencies as "scattering
crumbs." The 1993-94 allocation
of $8,367,262 for local needs
hardly represents "crumbs."
In addition, Federation along
with its financial partner, the
United Jewish Foundation, al-
located an additional $4 million
for local. agencies in 1993-94.
These funds went directly to aid
local services — from Jewish ed-
ucation to local Russian reset-
tlement.
In addition, Federation has
taken the lead in raising dollars

both for special local capital
campaigns, such as the $3.5
million expansion of the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Jewish Corn-
munity Center and special en-
dowments such as Windows,
the Jewish Family Service pro-
gram for the prevention and
treatment of family violence, for
which Federation has commit-
ted its lay and professional re-
sources to reach a goal of $2
million by summer 1994. In
fact, Federation is the prima-
ry endowment development
arm of all our local community
agencies.
Your editorial makes no men-
tion of the allocations from the
United Jewish Foundation that
were needed to fund agencies in
crisis, such as the Jewish Home
for Aged. It has already re-
quired millions of dollars from
the foundation to keep Borman
Hall operating while we find the
best alternative for our resi-
dents. Thanks to Federation
and the foundation, we have a
"rainy day fund" of local dollars
which allows us to continue
serving our nursing home resi-
dents while we search for the
right solution.
The purpose of the overseas
allocation of the Allied Jewish
Campaign is to sustain the lives
of our people wherever they live
and to enable refugees to begin
a new life in the Jewish home-
land. More than 7,000 arrived
in Israel last month alone.
Recent events in the former
Soviet Union and in Eastern
Europe underscore the contin-
uing nature of these rescue and
rehabilitation efforts. It is im-
portant that all of us keep this
paramount life-saving role in
mind.
The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit is proud
of its record of support, both for
our local community and for our
traditional commitment to the
Jews who need our assistance
nationally, overseas and in Is-
rael. The issue is not one of
"overseas vs. local needs" but of
commitment to the totality of
Jewish need wherever it occurs.
Obviously, the best way to
keep this commitment in the fu-
ture will be to raise more dol-
lars for our Allied Jewish
Campaign and for all the pro-
grams we continue to support.
