ollowing a national trend to
boost funding to local agen-
cies, the board of governors
of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit has
approved increasing the
percentage of Allied Jewish
Campaign revenues ear-
marked for the Detroit
Jewish community.
The new split, effective this June, will
increase the percentage of Campaign
money used for local needs by 3 percent
of the Campaign total. The increase will
take place in increments of 1 percent an-
nually over the next three years.
Based on a projected Campaign total
of $26 million, this could mean an ad-
ditional $260,000 for local Jewish pro-
grammin.g in 1994.
The money will be redirected from
funds that, in the past, were given to the
United Jewish Appeal, which supports
Jewish causes overseas.

it the big lie.
The book is 334 pages,

by the Nation of Islam, The Secret
Relationship Between Blacks and Jews
alleges that Jews played the major role
in the slave trade — "have been conclu-
sively linked to the greatest criminal en-
deavor ever undertaken against an entire
race of people...the Black African
Holocaust" — then orchestrated a cover-
up to hide their guilt.
"It's absurd on the face of it," said
Professor Endelman, head of the Judaic
studies department at the University of
Michigan. Slavery was a fact of Southern
plantation life, he said, "and Jews were
not part of the plantation-owning class.
The vast majority of Jews in the South
were involved in retail trade, brokerage.
"The Secret Relationship is part of that
old canard about Jews controlling all the
finances...it's the big lie, just like what
the Nazis did."
First published in 1991, The Secret
Relationship came to the forefront late
last month after Nation of Islam national
