til mid-April, with an Oneg
Shabbat afterwards.
And tourists are often among
those in attendance.
"They're amazed that such a
small out of the way area has a
fully functioning synagogue,"
says Mr. Bronstein.
Besides the sanctuary, the fa-
cilities include a social hall,
kitchen, library and a classroom
for the Hebrew school students.
The members of this congre-
gation include permanent res-

idents and "snowbirds" who
travel to the warm Caribbean
only for the winter months.
Members also include 12 West
Indians who became involved
with Judaism and the syna-
gogue through marriage.
The presence of West Indian
congregants may seem sur-
prising to visitors. "But we don't
see it as unusual," says Mr.
Bronstein, who emphasizes that
this is an island where varied
groups all get along well.
"There are very good rela-
tions between Jews and non-
Jews on the island," says Mr.
Bronstein, a member of the In-
terfaith Coalition of St. Croix.
B'nai Or is on the same road
with two other churches and a
mosque. Right next to the syn-
agogue is the Mormon church,
and during the three years the
Mormons were building their
church, they used the syna-
gogue. It is also used by the is-
land's Unitarians.
Jews were living in harmony
with non Jews on St. Croix long
before B'nai Or was founded.
Even though St. Croix's Jewish
community is not as historic as
that of St. Thomas, the Jewish
presence on St. Croix dates back
to the Revolutionary War.

Alexander Hamilton_, born on
the Caribbean island of Nevis,
was raised on St Croix. And it
was the Jews on the island who
raised money to send him to
Kings College, which is now Co-
lumbia University.
The tombstones in the Jew-
ish cemetery in Christiansted
attest to the existence of a Jew-
ish community in the mid 19th
century, says Mr. Bronstein.
This community did not remain
active continuously, but by the
1950s it had revived.

"I. think it's a miraculous
thing," says Mr. Bronstein.
"We're such a small group, but
we've accomplished so much
over the years." ❑
