Synagogues Shabbat Services for Singles Winter Classes At Shir Shalom The Reform and Conservative Congregations of the Metropoli- tan Detroit area are proud to announce the 1993-94 series of Beginning Feb. 28, Shir Shalom's For Adults Only or Post Bar/Bat Mitzvah will offer the following classes: Mondays for four weeks, the Reverend James Lyons, director for the Michigan Ecumenical Council, will teach "What Jews Should Know About Christianity" from 7-8 p.m. Cantor Sam Berman will teach Introduction to Ju- daism from 7-8 p.m. Richard Lobenthal, director of the Anti- Defamation League of Michi- gan, will teach a class titled "Hate in the 90s, The Legit- imization of Intolerance" from 8-9 p.m. Wednesday evening is lan- guage night. Classes in begin- ning Hebrew (Alan Lowen, Instructor), beginning Yiddish (Rabbi Ahron Davidson), and conversational Hebrew (Narda Oz) will be offered. These class- es will run for eight weeks. On Thursdays, Rabbi Dan- nel Schwartz will teach an in- troduction to Judaism class from 7-8 p.m. and a four week class titled "What Happens Af- ter I Die" from 8-9 p.m. Also on Thursdays from 7-8 p.m., Rab- bi Sherwin Wine, rabbi of the Birmingham Temple, will offer "Eastern Europe; Fascism or Democracy." She is a Board Certified Clinical social worker who has consulted and published extensively in the area of group psycho- therapy. Through her work with adults, adolescents, and family groups, Ms. Weiner has learned the value of humor in dealing with difficult situations. Beth Achim Holiday Plans The Youth Department of Con- gregation Beth Achim will hold their annual Purim Carnival Feb. 20 from noon-3 p.m. at the synagogue. The carnival will feature games for all ages, a va- riety of prizes and lunch. Stars of Congregation Beth Achim will present a tale of Purim titled Who's Mordy, a rock parody 5 p.m. Feb. 27. Questions about Passover will be answered March 1 at 8 p.m. when Rabbi Martin Berman will offer a special class at the synagogue to explain how to observe Passover properly when it falls, as it does this year, on Saturday night.
