conversions and supervising
kashrut — all of which are the
prerogatives of the Rabbinate
(national or local) — which re-
mains the exclusive preserve of
Orthodoxy.
So despite the air of celebra-
tion in Conservative and Re-
form quarters, the famous
"status quo" on religious affairs
essentially remains intact.
Considering that fact, the re-
action to judgment the by the
Orthodox powers-that-be was
viewed by many as ungracious,
at best. Knesset Member Shaul
Yahalom of the National Reli-
gious Party restricted his re-
sponse to a warning that the
NRP would work to ensure that
the "influence of the minority
that does not accept the au-
thority of the rabbinate is kept
to a minimum."
But in outbursts of anger and
vitriol, Orthodox spokesmen
categorically declared that they
would not sit on the same coun-
cils as Conservative and Reform
representatives. And branding
the members of the alternate
streams as "evil religious peo-
ple who cause chaos," former
Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren
warned that they will "bring
about the destruction of the re-
ligious councils."
But Rabbi Ehud Bandel, a
spokesman of the Masorti
movement, was not terribly con-
cerned by that prospect.
"I'll have no regrets it if the
religious councils collapse," he
said candidly, "for religious ser-
vices can always be provided by
a municipal department."
Neither could he guarantee
that with just two out of 31 rep-
resentatives on the Jerusalem
religious council, for one, the al-
ternate streams could exert
much influence. Nevertheless,
he stressed, "as long as religious
councils exist, we want our
rightful place on them as a mat-
ter of principle."
In a more light-hearted ap-
proach, Rabbi Regev suggested
that "if the Orthodox parties
don't want to sit with us, they
can quit the councils and leave
them in our hands."
Yet Rabbi Regev believes
that the Orthodox threat to boy-
cott the "reformed" bodies will
prove to be an empty one. Re-
calling earlier shouts of "gevaltr
in response to court judgments
that gave women entree to the
religious establishment, he not-
ed that despite apocalyptic
prophecies, once Leah Shakdiel
took her seat on the Yerouham
religious council, life simply
went on. Thereafter, it was
darkly suggested that Rabbi
Yisrael Lau would have to
withdraw his candidacy for the
position of Chief Rabbi of Tel
Aviv if women participated in
the elective assembly.
But they did, he didn't, and
