Such a complete withdrawal from the strate- gic heights is the price Syria has repeatedly demanded for peace, though Syria has so far refused to fully spell out the extent of the peace it is willing to offer, as Israel has demanded. According to a survey con- ducted by the Dahaf In- stitute last week for the Yediot Achronot newspaper, 61 percent of the Israeli public opposes such an exchange, with 37 percent supporting it. The margin of error for the poll is 4 percent. However, the idea of a par- tial withdrawal for a full peace wins wide favor: 62 percent say they would sup- port a limited withdrawal, and 36 percent would op- pose. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin last week declared that he would hold a national referendum to approve a withdrawal from the Golan, That followed the meeting Jan. 16 between Syrian President Hafez Assad and President Clinton, at which time Assad was seen to have moved closer toward offering Israel a full peace in exchange for the desired withdrawal. ❑ $899 Daily 10 Ili 8.
