British Leader
Visits Arads

London (JTA) - The c se of
missing Israeli airman Ron
Arad received a boost this
week, when British Prime
Minister John Major agreed
to meet with members of
Arad's family, who were
visiting here.
In a second encouraging
development, British diplo-

release of Mr. Arad, who is
thought to have been cap-
tured after being shot down
over Lebanon in 1986, would
be a key confidence-building
measure in the Middle East
peace process.
Mr. Major's decision to see
Mr. Arad's wife, Tami, and
brother, Chen, underlined
the government's deter-
mination to help free him.
The meeting between Mr.
Major and Mr. Arad's family
was planned after 800 people
demonstrated outside the
Iranian Embassy here.
Mr. Arad bailed out from a
fighter plane over Lebanon
in 1986 and was believed to
have been held by pro-
Iranian troops in Lebanon.
The last time any message
was received that he was
alive was in October 1987.
During their meeting with
Mr. Major, Mr. Arad's wife
and brother were expected to
present him with a petition
bearing 25,000 signatures
that was addressed to the
United Nations and the
International Committee of
the Red Cross.
The petition calls for
Arad's release and that of
several other Israelis miss-
ing in action. ❑
