Paper Accuses

Jerusalem (JTA) — Saying
political motives were at
work, the Jerusalem Post's
editor has accused the For-
eign Ministry of lying about
why it decided to cut its
subscriptions to the news- .
paper's overseas edition
from 1,100 to 87.
David Bar-Ilan said that
the Foreign Ministry had
called the move a cost-
cutting measure. But he
charged this was a lie, since
the ministry subsequently
refused his offer of free
newspapers.
"In the editorials of the
paper," said Mr. Bar-Ilan,
"we do have very severe
criticism of some of the
government's policies and I
think that's only natural.
"On the other hand, be-
cause we feel the respon-
sibility of being the only
English newspaper in the
country and the only window
to the world from Israel, we
do include the whole gamut
of political opinion in this
country."
The Foreign Ministry told
Israel Radio the cancellation
of the subscriptions was part
of a new policy.
