ast week's warmer weath-
er may have thawed De-
troit, but it nearly
devastated one downtown
congregation.
Early Jan. 24, Alan Schenk,
a member of Congregation
T'chiyah (located on the third
floor at St. Mary's Community
Center in Greektown) received
a phone call from the tenants
below. Water was dripping from
the ceiling.
Mr. Schenk, his wife and an-
other congregant rushed to the
building and up to its third floor.
"It was like a waterfall," Mr.
Schenk said.
Last year, as part of plans to
renovate the structure built in
1860, a new air-conditioning
system was installed on the
fourth floor directly above Con-
gregation T'chiyah.

Pipes froze, thawed and
burst directly into the sanctu-
ary. The small adjoining social
hall remained dry. With the
help of some first-floor tenants,
congregants moved- the pews,
ark and chandeliers into the un-
touched room. Holes were
drilled to drain the floor.
Damage estimates are not
yet available.
"Preliminary indications
show there may be more dam-
age to the pews than we first
imagined," Mr. Schenk said.
"We have insurance on our con-
tents, so we expect most of the
damage to be covered."
Both Torah scrolls are safe at
Mr. Schenk's home. Services
will continue either in the so-
cial hall or another room in the
community center. ❑

Or imagine what it
would be like to watch a "Night-
line" show geared exclusively to
a Jewish audience.
Intrigued? Then tune in 7
a.m. Sundays to WNZK 690
AM for the newest sound to hit
metropolitan Detroit's radio air-
waves.
Radio veteran Phil Fink of
Beachwood, Ohio, has expand-
ed his Shalom America show to
include Michigan and five oth-
er states. Detroit is the latest
market in Mr. Fink's national
campaign to boost his listening
audience.
"We try to keep the show
timely," Mr. Fink says. "For the
news, we give a synopsis of the
week."
The live Jewish radio pro-
gram, which runs weekly in De-
troit from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.,
combines Jewish comedy, Cha-
sidic and Israeli music with
weekly interviews of Jewish fig-
ures like Ohio Sen. Howard
Metzenbaum and Israeli offi-
cials like Yitzhak Rabin.
Host Phil Fink, who studied
broadcasting with Specs
Howard when the Detroit radio
mogul was living in Cleveland,
has run the program for 27
years in Cleveland. And in the

past year, the program has been
expanded to hit airwaves in
New York, New Jersey, Penn-
sylvania, Maryland and West
Virginia.
Past shows have included
call-in contests and modern
Jewish music like Israeli rock
and klezmer. Singer Avraham
Fried, who specializes in Cha-
sidic pop, also was featured.
"We look for the best and the
brightest in Jewish music," Mr.
Fink says.
Mr. Fink, 50, began the pro-
gram while working for an eth-

nic FM station in Cleveland. In
addition to the Shalom Ameri-
ca show, which ran daily until
eight years ago, Mr. Fink di-
rected news for the station.
Notable guests have includ-
ed "many of the important dig-
nitaries of the past 25 years,"
Mr. Fink says. Among them:
Nobel Prize winner Isaac Ba-
shevis Singer — two days be-
fore winning the prestigious
award. ❑
