Nestled in the heart of Sylvan Lake is a studio. Natural wood floors and
vaulted ceilings with skylights are combined to create the feel of an artist's
loft. The two artists at this studio are Anna and Tomas, Detroit's most innov-
ative hair team, and they own and operate metro Detroit's best kept secret,
Capelli Hair Colour Studio.
What is unique about Capelli is that both Anna and Tomas have selected
their area of expertise and honed their respective talents to perfection. Anna,
who is the sole colourist at the studio, studied under biochemists in Paris,
London and Milan and has created, over the last 30 years, her own condition-
ing hair colour formulas and techniques. Working with chemicals cannot
and should not be taken lightly, according to Anna. "Knowing the condition
of a client's hair, what chemicals to use, and how the chemicals will react with
the particular hair is crucial to achieving great-looking colour and for hair to
be healthy and natural looking," says Anna. "No two heads of hair are alike.
As an artist it is important that I create a colour that enhances my client's skin
tone and that the colour is as vivid and lustrous as nature intended. As a tech-
nician, my utmost priority is to insure that my client's hair is in the best condi-
tion possible when I am finished. That is an equation for great-looking hair."
Partners with Anna for over 20 years and the hair designer of this creative
team is Tomas. Also schooled abroad, Tomas is always abreast of the latest
hair fashions but, like a true artist, he does not rely on copying the existing
styles. He digests the information and considers the perimeters of his materi-
als. Tomas takes into account his client's face shape, hair texture, head shape
and even lifestyle to design a look that is fitting to them. "The fundamental
element in great-looking hair," says Tomas, "is in the cut. After that, styling
falls easily into place. Hair manageability is a result of consistency from hair-
cut to haircut."
For both Anna and Tomas, the quality of their products is a priority.
Anna's formulas contain conditioners that often leave the hair in better shape
than before it was colour-treated. Tomas uses perm solutions brought in from
Italy and specially formulated for colour-treated hair. Their shampoos and
styling products are a French line that is 100% botanically-based and is a
therapeutic regimen for hair. These products are served up as 'prescriptions'
for the hair in order to revitalize it so hair looks great for life, and not just
'styled' for the week.
Prescribing to the Capelli standard of excellence is Hollywood make-up
artist, Gina Di Maria. Gina, who has trained in make-up and special effects
for film and television and has to her list of credits "The Grifters," with
Angelica Huston and Annette Bening, and "Guilty By Suspicion," with
Robert De Niro, has joined the Capelli team. She specializes in custom-blend-
ed foundations that are preservative and fragrance free(good for sensitive
skins), and blended on the spot to client specifications. Gina is on-site for
make-up consultation and application.
