Special attention is often given to the poles
that support the canopy. In days of old, par-
ents would plant a cypress tree when a baby
boy was born, and a cedar tree for a baby girl,
and, at the time of marriage, cut branches from
each for poles. These days, many couples use
plain dowels; others add a more rustic touch
by gathering tall branches from the woods
and shaping them into poles. For her chup-
pot, Shaffer tops oak poles with carved wood-
en pineapples, symbols of fertility.
Those who marry under special chuppot
often find uses for them afterwards. Couples
who exchanged rings under tallisim may wrap
their babies in the shawls during a bris. Oth-
ers hang their chuppot over their beds, or quilt
them and use them as bedcoverings. An heir-
loom chuppah may be hung on a wall as a
visual memory of the happy day. "If s a way to
be constantly reminded of the joy of your wed-
ding," Shaffer says. 111
