A Musical Detour

RUTH ROVNER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
I

that often make a travel ex-
perience even more inter-
esting.
My original plan on my first
Sunday in Frankfurt was to vis-
it its well known Jewish muse-
um and see the displays and
artifacts about Jewish life in
Germany which IN read about
with interest.
Even though I did visit the
museum, I never got to see the
exhibits that day. Instead I was

Yiddish songs.
Their repertoire was diverse:
They sang comic songs and lyri-
cal ones, lively songs and plain-
tive pieces. Between songs, they
spoke to the audience in Ger-

a screen: slides that showed
scenes of Jewish life in Eastern

unexpected — the sound of Yid-
dish music.
When I arrived at the muse-
um — easy to find because of its
riverside location — I was sur-
prised to see a large gathering
of people in the main lobby.
Chairs were assembled in a
central area that is usually the
lobby, and every seat was tak-
en. By then, in fact, it was
standing room only, as people
stood in the back and on the
sides of the room, listening to
the two young men, one hold-
ing a clarinet, the other seated
plause was so rousing that the
two musicians returned to do
several encores.
The concert was not a typical
event: I later found out that this
particular weekend there was
a special festival of Frankfurt's
museums, with open houses
and special programs at many
of them, including the Jewish
Museum.
Judging from the crowds, this
event was especially popular.
The chance to hear Yiddish mu-
sic in Germany is unusual.
What's more, it was presented
