The life of the rebbetzin
has been a daily learning ex-
perience for Ms. Nelson.
Rabbi Nelson grew up in a
rabbinic family. Alicia did
not. They work to make time
for themselves. The process
includes learning how to say
no to social invitations and
spending many evenings out
in the city.
"We like to go downtown,"
Ms. Nelson said. "There are
wonderful things to do. Plus,
it provides a sense of
anonymity we don't have in
Southfield or on Orchard
Lake Road. We can never
really sneak away, though."
But along with the some-
times inconveniences of being
a rebbetzin, Ms. Nelson has
been pleased to find the role
allows her a certain power
and legitimacy in the com-
munity. How to embrace and
attract singles has always

Israeli Leaders Vexed
At Assad's Promises

Jerusalem (JTA) — Yitzhak
Rabin and Ezer Weizman
are not satisfied with the
promises Syrian President
Hafez Assad made to Presi-
dent Clinton.
Both had critical words for
the Syrian leader.
President Weizman,
speaking to settlers in the
West Bank, said Mr. Assad
had "made Clinton his
spokesman" and had let the
American president articu-
late positions the Israelis
want to hear from Mr. Assad
himself.
Although Mr. Clinton gave

"Would they have listened
if I wasn't David's wife?
Maybe. But I feel I can get
more things done as David's
wife. It's borrowed power, but
I feel confident with it," Ms.
Nelson said. "I guess the
great sadness is when you are
no longer the rabbi's wife,
either through divorce or
death. The congregation isn't
quite sure what to do with
you. It's like you're de-
throned.
"I once heard a story that
when the rabbi died, every-
one told the rebbetzin to leave
the community rather than
try to figure out how she fit
in without her husband. Life
would supposedly be easier
that way." ❑

servative rabbis to discuss
action, they listened.

assurances that Syria is
ready for a full peace and
normalized relations with
the Jewish state, Mr. Weiz-
man said he wants to hear
those words from Mr.
Assad's own lips.
He said Mr. Assad should
have directly addressed
Israel's security concerns
and should seek Israel's con-
fidence as the late Egyptian
President Anwar Sadat did,
coming to Jerusalem and
addressing the Knesset.
Supporting a move favored
by the settlers, Mr. Weizman
praised Prime Minister
Rabin's decision to call for a
national referendum on any
withdrawal from the Golan
Heights, Syria's require-
ment for a peace agreement.
Mr. Rabin, addressing a
Labor Party meeting in Tel
Aviv, said 1994 must see a
peace breakthrough between
Israel and Syria if the region
is not to return to a
dangerous political impasse.
Mr. Rabin spoke of his dis-
appointment with Mr.
Assad's performance in
Geneva and said the refer-
endum on the Golan would
give the Syrian leader the
opportunity to persuade
Israel that he is a worthy
peace partner.
Although Mr. Rabin in-
sisted his government has a
clear mandate to negotiate
territorial compromises in
