SALE MERCHANDISE

Prize Winner
Blasts Israelis

Amsterdam (JTA) — A Jew
who has taken on a Palestin-
ian identity was recently
awarded a special human-
itarian prize in Sweden for
her work among Palestinian
children in the territories.
Arna Mer-Khamis, reci-
pient of what is called the
"alternative Nobel Prize,"
then visited Holland, where
she solicited funds for her
work and gave a number of
lectures and interviews in
which she raged against
Israel.
She also voiced her opposi-
tion to the present peace
agreement between Israel
and the Palestine Liberation
Organization, as well as to a
two-state solution.
Ms. Mer-Khamis, a
longtime Communist who
was born in Safed to Jewish
parents 64 years ago, ad-
vocated one Palestinian
state for both Jews and Pa-
lestinians.
She called for Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin to drop his present
ideology and declare that
[here must be one country
for two peoples. This is the
only chance for peace, she
said in several interviews.
Ms. Mer-Khamis, who was
awarded the "Right
Livelihood Award," married
an Arab with whom she had
three sons. One of her sons
has opted to be Jewish, and
the others have taken on Pa-
lestinian identities.
She has been reportedly
interrogated many times by
Israeli forces and arrested
twice.
The award was bestowed
in Stockholm on Dec. 8 on
five women, for a total equal

to US $200,000. The award,

which is announced around
the time of the Nobel prizes,
was established in 1980 by
Jakob von Uxkell, who fi-
nances the prize by selling
his private stamp collection
and getting private dona-
tions.
Ms. Mer-Khamis will use
her prize money for the
organization Care and Lear-
ning in Defense of Children
Under Occupation, which
she established in the West
Bank town of Jenin to help
children in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip.
Ms. Mer-Khamis said she
greatly distrusts the sinceri-
ty and desire for peace of Mr.
Rabin and the Israelis.
Like many a Palestinian,
she said she is not opposed to
Jews but is strongly opposed
to all Zionists, who she be-
lieves are racists. ❑
