News Vandalism Is Investigated London (JTA) — London police are investigating two anti-Semitic acts of van- dalism that have taken place within a month at an East London Jewish cemetery. In the latest incident, van- dals broke into the East Ham cemetery and spray- painted Nazi slogans on its inside walls and a swastika and anti-Semitic obscenities on three graves of Jews who died in World War II. "Nazis rule" and "Hitler 6 million, Jews 1" were painted in 2-foot-high green letters on the walls near the sanctuary. Green spray paint was also used to deface the graves. Police are calling for the witness who reported the latest attack to contact the precinct. The vandalism is being investigated by a spe- cial unit for organized racial incidents. Jonathan Lew, chief ex- ecutive of the United Syn- agogue, the Orthodox Jew- ish umbrella body which owns the cemetery, de- scribed the attack as a copycat of last month's desecration. He said United Synagogue has to decide on an effective security system for its cemeteries. "It is a matter of extreme regret that vandals and hooligans desecrate places of rest, especially where there are war graves," he said. Mike Whine, director of security for the British Board of Deputies, the secular umbrella body of Jews, said: "We have discussed security with all the Jewish burial societies, but it is their responsibility to implement whatever they feel is necessary." The East Ham Jewish cemetery is walled in on three sides, with the fourth backing onto private gardens. The offensive graf- fiti has since been removed. Det. Sgt. Fraser Neilson of the police told the Chronicle that such attacks were difficult to guard against but acknowledged that they are distressing to relatives of the deceased. Last month, vandals desecrated five graves at the cemetery, including those of three men who died while serving in the armed forces during World War II. No perpetrator was found. A police spokesman said he did not think it was the work of an organized neo- Nazi group. ❑ WHEN TERROR STRIKES Your palms begin to sweat... You're on the verge of hysteria...
