Budapest Ghetto
Commemorated

Budapest (JTA) — Large
crowds gathered here this
week to commemorate the
49th anniversary of the lib-
eration of the Budapest
Ghetto.
Members of the Jewish
community, together with
high-ranking Hungarian
politicians, gathered to re-
member the actions of the
Soviet Red Army, which lib-
erated the ghetto on Jan. 18,
1945.
Attending the com-
memoration ceremonies
were four Hungarian
government officials — the
foreign minister, the min-
isters of culture and health
and the speaker of the
Parliament.
"There are still concentra-
tion camps (today), and peo-
ple are killed even nowadays
in the vicinity of Hungary,"
one speaker said, referring'
to recent events in the
former Yugoslavia.
"Anti-Semitism is still
alive in Hungary," said an-
other speaker, who added
that "clear signs of it could
be seen in graffiti"
throughout the Hungarian
capital.
There were approximately
200,000 Jews living in
Budapest in 1944. If the
Russian troops did not lib-
erate the ghetto, many
believe that the Jewish peo-
ple would have been killed
in a matter of weeks by the
Nazis or by their Hungarian
collaborators, the
Hungarian Arrow Cross
movement.
A candlelight ceremony
was held in memory of Raoul
Wallenberg, the Swedish
diplomat who saved the lives
of 100,000 Hungarian Jews
during World War II.
Despite Mr. Wallenberg's
efforts, nearly 100,000 Jews
perished in Budapest, while
another 500,000 Jews from
the countryside were
deported, mostly to
Auschwitz, where they were
killed.
Mr. Wallenberg disap-
peared after being seen ap-
proaching the Soviets, whom
he viewed as allies. He was
reported to have been im-
prisoned in Soviet labor
camps, and the mystery of
what happened to him has
never been solved.
Meanwhile, right-wing
elements held a gathering of
their own Tuesday in an
outer district of the
Hungarian capital. Dozens
of people gathered to hear
nationalistic and anti-
Semitic speeches. 111
