Inflation Lower in Territories Inflation in Judea and Samaria was 4.9 percent last year, while in Gaza the Consumer Price Index grew 4.1 percent, the Central Bureau of Statistics re- ported last week. In 1992, prices rose 12 per- cent in Judea and Samaria and 12.9 percent in Gaza. Econo- mist Jonathan Katz, head of Economic Modeling and Fore- casting, explained the sharp drop was due to the decline in economic activity. In addition, given the fact that the territories' population is much poorer than Israel's, the importance of the weight of food in the territories' consumer bas- ket is much greater. Fruits and vegetable prices fell 8.3 percent in Judea and Samaria and 5.6 percent in Gaza. Excluding fruits and veg- etables prices, the CPI in Judea and Samaria rose 6.8 percent and 5.9 percent in Gaza.
