Jack Caminker rides a camel in Egypt

third project since joining IESC
five years ago. He will spend be-
tween six weeks and three
months with a client who owns
hotels and is interested in pri-
vatizing the business that is
partially owned by the govern-
ment.
Mr. Caminker's job will be to
help the company design a fea-
sibility study and develop a
business plan. 'They need to be-
come more competitive," he
said.
"I really get a kick out of see-
ing the eyes of clients light up
when I give them information
that I think is so basic," he said.
"It is very natural to us. And
they think it is magic."
It was magical to his client in
Kenya in 1989 when Mr.
Caminker suggested a compa-
ny build the first area compre-
hensive medical complex. He
helped them draw plans, do a
study to assess needs, and set
them on track.
Unfortunately,
Mr.
Caminker said, his client since
has died, and he has no way to
follow up on the project. Some-
day he hopes to travel to Kenya
to see firsthand if the project
came to fruition.
In 1992, he and his wife
spent about three months in
Egypt, where he offered some
ideas to owners of the Aboul Fo-
touh Co. for its real estate di-
vision.
Mr. Caminker taught the
company how to put together a
blueprint for the plan, which
has been put on hold.
"We figure the plan will go
forward once things settle down
over there," he said.
On each trip, Mrs. Caminker,
a former legal secretary, has as-
sisted her husband with paper-
work. She also had a little fun
of her own.
In Kenya, the Caminkers
spent weekends on African sa-
faris. But in Egypt, Mrs.
Caminker played in a bridge
tournament with actor/bridge

champion Omar Sharif — and
she still talks about the thrill of
outscoring the avid player.
Miles Denham, spokesman
for IESC, said the fall of the
Communist bloc in Eastern Eu-
rope has prompted many re-
quests for skills bank volunteers
who can assist with business
plans in areas like the Baltics
and the new republics of the for-
mer Soviet Union.
"We now are looking for peo-
ple in public administration,"
Mr. Denham said.
To join the skills bank, vol-
unteers must fill out a four-page
application that assesses man-
agement and hands-on skills.
Recruiters help screen appli-
cants, whose references are
thoroughly checked, Mr. Den-
ham said.
Projects last up to three
months, which often makes the
program difficult for mid-level
career persons, Mr. Denham
said. But, he added, this is not
a program designed exclusive-
ly for retirees.
"I feel fortunate that I got into
the program," Mr. Caminker
said. "And I have had fun."
IESC was the brainchild of
David Rockefeller, who 30 years
ago questioned the effectiveness
of the United States funneling
billions of dollars into develop-
ing countries.
Mr. Rockefeller suggested
that these nations must learn
management skills and how to
properly spend money to com-
pete on the economic scene.
Announced in the White
House Rose Garden by Presi-
dent Lyndon Johnson on June
15, 1964, the IESC since has
completed more than 16,000
projects in 129 countries. Each
year, the corps tries to match
one volunteer (and spouse) with
each of 1,000 projects.

gram, write to: Vice President,

2005. ❑
