sponding remarkably and hang-
ing together. It's an amazing
feeling," said Rabbi Gary
Greenbaum, who doubles as
president of the Los Angeles Po-
lice Commission and western
regional director of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee.
The Jewish Community
Building on Wilshire Boulevard,
which just before the Jan. 17
temblor had installed banks of
telephones in preparation for
the planned Super Sunday
United Jewish Fund drive on
Feb. 6, has converted the 12 ro-
tary phone lines to an emer-
gency hotline, which also
accepts offers of housing, food, •
transportation and other assis-
tance.
Federation staff members
and volunteers working the
lines are trained to analyze the
callers' problems and assign
them to the appropriate agen-
cies, whether Jewish, general
(such as the Red Cross), or gov-
ernmental (primarily FEMA,
the Federal Emergency Man-
agement Agency), said Terry
Bell, the federation president.
In an interview, Ms. Bell and
Mr. Fishel outlined some of the
immediate steps the federation,
its agencies, synagogues, com-
munity centers and other bod-
ies of the organized Jewish
community will take to cope
with the aftermath of the dis-
aster.
The community's rough or-
der of priorities is to find a place
to stay for those whose homes
have been destroyed or made
unsafe; make cash loans to buy
food and other necessities; pro-
vide transportation to relief cen-
ters and agencies and offer
personal counseling to those left
traumatized.
To help meet immediate
housing needs, JFC and its Real
Estate Division have compiled
a data base to match landlords
with the newly homeless.
The frontline Jewish agen-
cies dealing most directly with
those in need are the Jewish
Family Service offices in mid-
city, Santa Monica and the San
Fernando Valley; Board of Rab-
bis; Bet Tzedek legal services;
Jewish Big Brothers; Hillel
Council; SOVA Kosher Food
pantries, and the Jewish Voca-
tional Service, which is helping
those who have lost their jobs
or businesses in the quake.
Coordinating much of the
federation's outreach to the
community and outside agen-
cies is the Jewish Community
Relations Committee, under its
director, Steven Windmueller.
The outreach is by no means
limited to Jews, and the feder-
ation placed a full page ad in
Sunday's Los Angeles Times,
under the heading of "Tikkun
L.A." (Repair Los Angeles) in
English and Hebrew, listing the
