If he moves, the new district
would comprise Southfield and
Oak Park, which he already
serves. But new areas, like Pon-
tiac, are completely unknown
to him.
No one has formally an-
nounced a bid for the Senate
seat in a new district. State
Rep. Maxine Berman, D-South-
field, said she is not in the run-
ning. Yet former congressional
candidate Walter Briggs, who
lost the 1992 race to Rep. Joe
Knollenberg, is talking about a
run for the state office.

Most exciting in his political
career was serving the state as
a member of the 1963 Consti-
tutional Convention, and push-
ing for public funding for the
arts and the implementation of
the Michigan Council for the
Arts.
The arts council has unrav-
eled under the Engler admin-
istration, where the arts are no
longer a priority. This is dread-
ful for Sen. Faxon to watch.
Sen. Faxon always believed
he would retire when the vot-
ers no longer elected him. Yet
this time, he may not wait for
the voters to decide his fate.
"Can I still do anything
there? This governor has cre-
ated such a partisan atmos-
phere," he said. "If I were
younger, maybe I would see the
light at the end of the
tunnel."
