During a Jan. 16 visit that was expected to be a courtesy call, Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin discussed the peace process and U.S. in- volvement for 40 minutes with U.S. Reps. Dale Kildee, D-Flint, and Joe Knollenberg, R-Birm- ingham. "I thought for sure the meet- appreciation of the Middle East," Mr. Knollenberg said. "It is important that we strive to have a peaceful settlement." Both members of Congress said the week-long trip, from Jan. 9 to 17, sponsored by the Jewish Community Council, re- inforced their support for Israel. "Israel needs to continue to have aid," Mr. Kildee said. "If there is peace, it still will have economic problems. The Russ- ian Jews are arriving, and we must accommodate them. Mr. Rabin was aware of my role in supporting the loan guarantees." Added Mr. Knollenberg, a freshman representative who also had never been to Israel be- fore, yet who voted for foreign aid to Israel during his first year in office, "We thought it would be a quick 10-minute meeting for a photo and hand- shake — especially since it was the same day the president was meeting with Assad." During the meeting, Mr. Ra- bin reiterated his belief in land for peace, and he told the con- gressmen, their wives and a few others on the mission that Is- rael will not give up land with- out some corresponding guarantees for security.
