pilgrimage to major biblical
sites in Israel and elsewhere.

He also wants to visit
Damascus and Antakya in
southern Turkey, which as
Antioch was the capital of
ancient Syria.
"This is the overall idea.
We'll see if it can be done,"
he said.
A pilgrimage such as he
envisaged would take in
sites in Israel, Turkey,
Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and
Syria.
Since he was elected pope
in 1978, the Polish-born pon-
tiff, who is now 73, has
visited more than 100 coun-
tries during more than 60
foreign trips.
He has said repeatedly
that he would like to revisit
Israel, which he visited
years ago.
He is expected to travel to
Lebanon this spring, fulfill-
ing a desire that was
thwarted by 15 years of civil
war.
The Israeli government
has invited John Paul to
visit whenever he wants. ❑
