' 1 only Jewish state in the world. This is the language of the Tanach and all the other sources of Judaism and, last but not least, Yiddish is the cultural legacy of only Ashkenazic Jews, not others. However, as it is so elo- quently stated in the article, Yiddish represents a significant part of our people's legacy and folklore and we shouldn't let it die. Rachel Kapen West Bloomfield School District's Help Unrecognized hi response to the article "Fire and Ice — Jews and Gentiles help Northgate families" (Jan. 14), I must express my great dis- appointment in the lack of recognition the article gave to the non-Jewish community members who so willingly gave to the Northgate victims. The Berkley School District, comprised of a predominately non-Jewish population, sent fliers home with students ask- ing for donations to be dropped off at Avery Elementary on Jan. 9. I was one of the volunteers working that day alongside a majority of gentile volunteers. It was the Berkley School Dis- trict community that filled the Resettlement Warehouse that Sunday with truckloads of goods. I witnessed the look of amazement, and how over- whelmed the three Russian Re- settlement drivers were when they saw the huge classrooms and hallways filled with bags of clothes, toys, linens, etc. from this wonderful community. I think Ruth Littmann, in her article, owed this community (who pulled together as just that — not Jews or gentiles) more than her last line ". . . and the Berkley School District is col- lecting donations." Lynn Cooper Oak Park JCC Can Help With Special Needs As a representative of a Fed- eration-funded community agency, I would like to express my enthusiasm for the recent attendance and presentations at the Federation's community forum. Having the opportunity to hear the concerns and needs of so many members of our com- munity was very beneficial to those of us who plan programs and services for the Jewish people of our neighborhoods. Many of those at the forum expressed their need for social, recreational and educational ac- tivities for children with special needs. While there is an enor- mous gap in service in this area, I would like to invite those in need of this service to seek out the Jewish Community Center. In recent years, particularly since 1992, the Center has been offering both inclusive and spe- cialized programs in the areas of child development, summer camp, physical education, cul- tural arts and adult services for adults and children with special needs. Many people in the commu- nity have responded to our out- reach efforts and are now active at the JPM and Maple/Drake buildings. However, clearly many of those in need are unaware of our offerings. While our programs and ser- vices have limitations, our staff is eager to discuss individual needs and to create opportuni- ties for participation in the wealth of activities offered at the Jewish Community Center. But it is difficult for the Jewish people to dismiss the history of anti-Semitism that extended over millenia in which the Church aided and abetted this evil. Others argue that we should not let the burden of the past prevent the writing of a new chapter of dialogue and re- spectful cooperation between Catholics and Jews. As we see how the scourge of anti-Semi- tism continues to spread in the United States and Europe, as we note the increasing denial of the Holocaust in our time, it be- comes even more urgent for us to grasp the outstretched hand of the Church and nurture the spirit of cooperation and mutu- al respect. These uniting and demanding tasks must be ad- dressed now. I recently saw a cartoon in which the animals are depicted in a long line waiting to board Noah's Ark. The legend be- neath the cartoon reads, "It looks very crowded. Let's catch the next boat." There is no next boat. After all the centuries of distrust and contempt, the time has come for our voyage into a new future. ❑ SILVER COINS ANTIQUE JEWELRY POCKET WATCHES GOLD COINS COIN COLLEC11ONS TIFFANY FRANKLIN MINT ROLEX WATCHES STICK PINS STERLING SILVER BROACHES SILVER DOLLARS HUMMELS ANTIQUE SILVER SILVER BARS FLATWARE SETS DIAMONDS CANDLESTICKS GEMSTONES PAPER MONEY SCRAP GOLD PATEK PHILLIPE OBJECTS D'ART VACHERON BOWLS B TRAYS TEA SERVICES COIN WATCHES CARTIER RINGS VAN CLEEF PIAGET POSTCARDS 10-24 KARAT GOLD PENDANTS CHAINS ROYAL DOULTON EARRINGS We are Interested in serving you or your client in the appraisal or liquidation of your coins, jewelry, col- lectibles or an entire estate.
