Rebbe Articles
Spawn Violence

Paris (JTA) — The French
Jewish weekly Actualite
Juive (Jewish Current
Events) was the target of
various attacks after it
published a report from the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
on the health of the Lubavit-
cher rebbe.
In several places, the
paper's stands were over-
turned; in other locations,
the newspapers were stolen.
Some vendors returned the
stands to Actualite Juive,
saying they were scared.
"Take your material
back," said one. "The rebbe
is immortal."
Serge Benattar, the
weekly's editor, received
anonymous telephone calls,
some threatening him,
others cursing him.
Mr. Benattar also was
handed a letter written by
Rabbi Benjamin Gorodetsky,
identified as the "chief per-
sonal representative of the
rebbe in Europe, North
Africa and Israel."
"I am compelled to take
exception to the article that
is based on innuendoes, half-
truths and statements taken
out of context. The doctors
who have been treating the
rebbe from the first
moments since his stroke,
are the rebbe's personal
physicians for the last 16
years and were chosen per-
sonally by the rebbe," he
wrote.
"While it may be inter-
esting copy for the media to
create controversy, the fact
of the matter is that the
rebbe's condition is stable
and he is active, as much as
his health allows, in his
various leadership func-
tions," Rabbi Gorodetsky
wrote.
JTA has learned that
among the calls to Actualite
Juive, one of them was from
a Lubavitch rabbi who called
JTA a "den of Reform
Judaism" aimed at destroy-
ing the Jewish faith.
Actualite Juive, with a cir-
culation of more than 15,000
copies, is the largest Jewish
weekly in France.
Representing the main-
stream French Jewish com-
munity, the paper runs at
least one double page of Or-
thodox religious teaching in
every issue.
The Lubavitch commun-
ity, which says it has 10,000
followers in France, regular-
ly places advertisements in
the paper. ❑
