For Free Estimates 681-8280 Food Children's Favorite Party Treats EILEEN GOLTZ SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS W hen my son's birthday rolls around, I have to make that annual de- cision whether or not to refinance the house and take 10 of his best friends to the movies or take the chance this year that the destruction to my basement is covered under my homeowners policy (just a little tip for those of you thinking of a party at home, Superglue damage is never covered.) Let's face it, children's par- ties have gotten out of hand. I know parents who think noth- ing of creating a theme party for a two year old. Hiring a clown, pony and a magician is a bit much for a kid who still naps twice a day and thinks spitting up food is an art form. I know that there are sever- al places in town that cater to children's parties. They offer all kinds of packages that include cake (I bring my own to make sure there's no question about it being kosher) and ice cream as well as goodie bags, not to mention price tags that rival the national debt. A children's par- ty is truly measured a success by how well you fill up those goodie bags. The competition to have the "coolest" party in- creases proportionally the old- er your child becomes. By the time they reach their teens, you'd do well to hire a consul- tant. I've come to the conclusion that the easiest, least expensive and most fun way to have a children's party is to let the chil- dren make their own decora- tions and treats. That way when you want them to help you clean up the mess they won't have a prayer of getting out of it. BERRY BERRY BAR fresh or frozen strawberries fresh or frozen blueberries fresh or frozen raspberries pineapple chunks whipped cream in spray cans* vanilla ice cream (option- al) cherries (optional) slices of pound cake Place a slice of pound cake in a bowl (you can add a scoop of Ice Cream at this point if you like) and let the kids put all the toppings they'd like. Let them spray the whip cream on and top with sprinkles. *Children love to have the extra cans of whip cream sprayed directly into their mouths. It looks dis- gusting but you'll be a hero if you help them do it! INITIAL PRETZELS 2 or 3 packages of frozen bread dough 1 egg, beaten coarse salt Give each child three balls of dough and have them roll them out into long ropes. Have them shape each rope into an initial and place it on a cookie sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and sprinkle with the salt. Bake at 350 degrees until gold- en. (Time will vary because some initials will be thicker than others so keep an eye on this. Approx. 15 min.) FROZEN BANANAS l/2 banana per child semi-sweet chocolate chips margarine colored sprinkles chopped nuts popsicle sticks wax paper and cookie sheet Place a piece of wax paper on the cookie sheet and set aside. For each cup of chocolate chips that you use, use 2 to 3 T. of margarine. Melt the margarine and chocolate together in the microwave. Mix well and set aside. Push a popsicle stick through the banana half. Dip the banana in the chocolate and then roll it in either the sprin- kles or nuts. Place the banana on the wax paper. When all the bananas are done, place them in the freezer for approx. 1 hour. (Do this activity at the begin- ning of the party and they will be ready when you're ready to eat or as a snack at the end of the party). Eileen Goltz ©1993
