Official Pursues
Prosecution

New York (JTA) — Brooklyn
District Attorney Charles
Hynes came out of his
meeting with Janet Reno
saying that the U.S. at-
torney general was
"receptive" to his proposal
that they jointly prosecute
two of the men who attacked
Yankel Rosenbaum during
1991's Crown Heights crisis.
Mr. Hynes proposed to Ms.
Reno that their offices work
together to prosecute
Lemrick Nelson and one
other person, believed to be
Ernesto Edwards, on federal
charges that the two
violated Mr. Rosenbaum's
civil rights by attacking him
solely because he was a Jew.
Ms. Reno's spokesperson,
Julie Anbender, said that

ficials agreed to work
together to gather evidence.
The meeting with Mr.
Hynes was "an opportunity
for us to review the evidence
gathered so far and discuss
the investigation," said Ms.
Anbender.
When asked when Ms.
Reno would announce her
decision, Ms. Anbender said,
"it is premature to ammu/ace
anything now."
Mr. Edwards, 24, has been
named by a witness for stab-
bing Mr. Rosenbaum, an
Australian Lubavitcher who
had been living in Crown
Heights, with the same knife
used by Nelson, who was ac-
quitted of the murder in
1992.
Three other witnesses
have also reportedly come .
forward against Mr. Ed-
wards.
Mr. Edwards is a felon ser-
ving 2-to-6 year prison term
for attempted robbery and
attempted drug sales.
A Brooklyn grand jury has
been hearing evidence since
Jan. 7 to determine if he will
