Simons Michelson Zieve Ad-
vertising celebrated its 65th
anniversary recently as over
300-folks from all walks of life
crowded the SMZ offices in Troy
for a lot of camaraderie.
But the seed of this respect-
ed advertising company was
Planted in 1921.
Leonard andLarry were boy-
hood friends, playing penny
ante poker at each other's
homes . . . 17-year-old Leonard
got a job as office boy and as-
sistant art director . . . at $25
a month . . . for Milton Hersh-
field's Detroit Ad-Service.
Milton didn't like his em-
ployees having friends visit
them at work . . . So when Larry
came one day, Leonard, who
had joined Milton Herschfield
just two weeks prior, was
seated in the front and tried to
kick his friend out . . . Larry,
however, said his visit wasn't to
see Leonard . . . he was there for
a job . . . which Larry got as a
copywriter.
This was the beginning of an
ad business friendship that
later blossomed into Simons
Michelson Advertising.
They left Ad-Services, and on
Jan. 12, 1929, with no money
between them . . . just the
"heaven-sent" loan from printer

With Leonard's knowledge of
installment jewelry promotion
and Larry's for credit clothing,
they set up a syndicated mat
service for these types of ac-
counts both had worked on pre-
viously and taken with them.
Leonard and Larry made
$25,000 the first six months
. . . They had 20 employees, one-
half of them artists used mainly
for paste-up work . . . The stock
market crash came in October
1929, but Leonard and Larry
still wound up the year totaling
$41,000.
When the bottom dropped
out of their art mat service, and
it folded, the two friends took
on various other accounts re-
moved from the jewelry and
clothing industries . . . Like Zip
Gas, 10 gallons for $1.
Leonard's son-in-law, Mort
Zieve, came on board in 1977
. He is chairman, with Larry's
son, Jim, his partner and com-
pany president.
They say that a good mar-
riage or partnership must have
arguments to be successful .. .
