John Demjanjuk:
Groups fought his return.

Demjanjuk
Battle Resumes

Washington (JTA) — The
Justice Department has
resumed its legal battle
against John Demjanjuk
with full force, filing mo-
tions in two Ohio federal
courts against the man once
accused of being Nazi death
camp guard "Ivan the Terri-
ble."
In one motion, the Justice
Department is appealing a
court order that overturned
the extradition of Mr. Dem-
janjuk to Israel. In another
motion, the department is
seeking to reopen the
denaturalization case
against the Cleveland
autoworker.
"Our objective is still to br-
ing about Mr. Demjanjuk's
prompt removal from the
United States," Attorney
General Janet Reno said.
"We want there to be no
doubt," Ms. Reno continued,
"that Mr. Demjanjuk served
in Nazi death camps and
concealed that fact when he
applied to become a U.S.
citizen."
Jewish groups have fought
strenuously against Mr.
Demjanjuk's return to the
United States after Israel's
Supreme Court ruled in July
that there was insufficient
proof that he was the
sadistic gas chamber
operator at Treblinka known
as "Ivan." In doing so, the
court overturned his death
sentence and cleared the
way for his return to
America.
The Justice Department
asked the 6th U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals in Cincin-
nati for a rehearing on its
decision to revoke the 1986
extradition order that sent

Mr. Demjanjuk to Israel. ❑

ALL IN ONE SHOT
A review of the many causes of nonoccu-
pational, noise-indused hearing loss is likely
to conclude that the most dangerous recre-
ational noise comes from firearms. While it
is estimated that 50 million Americans own
and use firearms, there is evidence that 15
to 40 percent of shooters do not wear ear
protection under certain conditions. Because
guns typically produce peak sound-pressure
levels of 150 to 170 decibels, a single expo-
sure to firearm noice can produce hearing
loss. Viewed another way, one shot from a
357 magnum rifle produces the equivalent
of 40 hours worth of exposure to a noisy
workplace. Those who engage in this recre-
ation should investigate the use of hearing
protection devices, as well as the possibility
that they may already have suffered hearing
losses.
