Letter Of The
Week Month Year

INVITE THE COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE

Tv B'SHEVAT

BRING THE ENTIRE FAMILY TO OUR INTERGENERATIONAL

CONCERT FEATURING:

Henry Cohen of Baltimore
wrote a letter to The New Re-
public that's a gem. He was re-
sponding to a previous letter the
magazine printed from some-
one identifying himself as "a
theological minimalist." The
first writer said "there must
have been some transcendent
act of creation because there is
no apparent reason why there
had to be a universe in the first
place."
Mr. Cohen wrote: "An act of
creation requires a creator, yet
there is no apparent reason why
there must have been a tran-
scendent creator to perform a
transcendent act of creation. A
theological minimalist must
therefore believe in a meta-
transcendent act of creation to
create the transcendent creator.
And also, of course, in a
metametatranscendent act of
creation to create the meta-
transcendent creator, and so on
ad infinitum. So it seems that
a theological minimalist might
better be characterized as a the-
ological maximalist. Or better
yet, as an atheist.

William Safire:
Forsees future.

Bill Satire,
Quiz Kid

Every pundit looks into his/her
crystal ball at the end of the
year and forsooths and foretells.
As 1993 ground to a halt, New
York Times columnist William
Safire couldn't resist. Among
the 12 multiple choice questions
he gave his faithful readers was
this gem:
"In the Middle East, (a) the
autocrat in Arafat will split the
PLO; (b) disillusion with Rabin's
concessions will topple Labor;
(c) Syria's Assad will make a
Golan deal under U.S. pressure
and lead to a Palestinian state."
Pick your answer, then com-
pare it to Mr. Safire's at the end
of this column. Finally, clip this
page and file it. Take it out next
Dec. 31 to see who was right. ❑
