Rome (JTA) — The newly es-
tablished diplomatic rela-
tions between Israel and the
Vatican have been clouded
by reports of Vatican objec-
tions to the possible ap-
pointment of a rabbi as
Israeli ambassador to the
Holy See.
But Israel sources have
downplayed the matter, and
there was no indication that
the reports would sour the
new relations or throw the
exchange of ambassadors off
track.
Reports have surfaced in
the Italian, American and
Israeli media that the Vat-
ican has, in effect, blocked
the possible appointment of
Rabbi David Rosen as Israeli
ambassador.
The British-born Rabbi
Rosen, who was formerly the
chief rabbi of Ireland, is the
Jerusalem-based director of
interfaith relations for the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith.
Rabbi Rosen was a key
negotiator in the talks
leading up to the Israeli-
Vatican agreement, which
was signed Dec. 30 in
Jerusalem. His name had
been mentioned in the media
as a possible ambassador.
Monsignor Andrea di
Montezemolo, the apostolic
delegate to Jerusalem, has
said openly that the first
Israeli ambassador to the
Holy See should be a career
diplomat.
The Vatican has stressed
that the bilateral agreement
is a state-to-state rather
than a theological accord.
But Monsignor
Montezemolo expressed
praise for Rabbi Rosen, say-

ing, "Rabbi Rosen is very
experienced, and he helped a
lot in relations between
Jews and Catholics. He is a
member of many (interfaith)
organizations. It would be a
pity if he should leave all
this activity to be a special
representative to the Holy
See."
Vatican spokesman Joa-
quin Navarro Valls declined
to comment on the issue,
saying only that for the mo-
ment the agreement bet-
ween the Vatican and Israel
has been signed and ambas-
sadors will soon be
exchanged.
While Vatican officials

to have a career Israeli dip-
lomat as ambassador, a
source close to the negotia-
tions that led to the agree-
ment said, they have pri-
vately indicated that they
prefer not to have a rabbi
serving as the Israeli envoy.
Harry Wall, the ADL di-
rector in Israel, was quoted
by the London Jewish
Chronicle as saying that the
Vatican's stance would sug-
gest "a slight touch of dual
standards, since, after all,
Vatican representatives
abroad are clerics."

faith relations said the
