Germany Will Boost
Social Security $$$

he German government

has signed a law that
might put more money in
the pocketbooks of some
metro Detroit women.
According to the new law,
certain women will receive ad-
ditional social security benefits.
This is not restitution for Holo-
caust victims, said Marianne
Wildstrom of Jewish Family
Service. Even so, the law likely
will affect many elderly Jewish
Detroiters who left Germany
during World War II.
"These women have all suf-
fered. They've all lost family
members, so anything to make
their lives easier is very wel-

come," said Ms. Wildstrom, who
works in the Restitution Office
at JFS.
The new benefit applies only
to mothers who fled Germany
during the Nazi era. According
to the law, the German gov-
ernment might give addition-
al monies — up to $19 per child
— to women who already qual-
ify for monthly social security.
The women must have been
born prior to 1926, left Ger-
many between Jan. 30, 1933,
and May 8, 1945, and have bi-
ological children born before
Dec. 31, 1949.

motions of editorial staff
members Elizabeth Ap-
plebaum and Jennifer Finer and
the addition of Andrew Buerger
to its company management
team.
' Ms. Applebaum, for three
years assistant editor, has been
promoted to associate editor.
She'll join the team of editor Phil
Jacobs and associate editor Alan
Hit,,sky in setting the course for
the editorial department's future.
She came to The Jewish News
six years ago from her post as as-
sociate editor of the Kansas City
Jewish Chronicle. She is a win-
ner of Jewish journalism's pres-
tigious Rockower and Smolar
Awards. Ms. Applebaum is a
graduate of Stephen's College.
Andrew Buerger takes on the
newly created position of Mar-
keting Director. Mr. Buerger's
major responsibility will be to
work with The Jewish News and
its sister publications, The Bal-
timore Jewish Times and Atlanta
Jewish Times on circulation and
database development. In addi-
tion, he will work with the De-

troit Jewish community so that
the newspaper will better serve
its readers and advertisers.
Before completing his master
of business administration from
the University of Colorado in
May, Mr. Buerger had been em-
ployed at Neodata Services, Inc.
in Boulder, Colo. Prior to that he
was media director at Corner-
stone Advertising, a Baltimore-
based ad agency.
Jennifer Finer is added to the
editorial staff as a staff writer fol-
lowing two stints as editorial
intern. She came to the newspa-
per after graduating last spring
from Michigan State Universi-
ty. She is a native of West Bloom-
field.
"If a publication is responsible
to one of the nation's leading
Jewish communities, it's impor-
tant to represent it with top flight
personnel," said Phil Jacobs, ed-
itor. "Elizabeth, Andrew and Jen-
nifer are committed to The
Jewish News' caring involvement
