main character, a country
singer turned private eye.
"I was writing in the first
person with a voice that
seemed to come to me, and if
you have a name like Kinky
Friedman, you may as well
run with it," said the author,
whose other characters are
based on people he knows.
"As far as the books are
concerned, I think that's
where Jewish audiences come
back to the Kinkster. I think
for a long time in country mu-
sic, I wasn't in touch with
them very much."
While Mr. Friedman be-
lieves that religious Judaism
is a waste of time, he contin-
ues bring his own brand of
Jewish undercurrent and ref-
erences to projects.
"I think Jews are a van-
ishing breed in general, like
the cowboy, so I empathize
with that," he said.
What started as a joke to
him — running as the first
Jewish justice of peace in
Kerrville — turned into some-
thing he wanted to attain in
1986. He attributed the elec-
tion loss to publicity about his
sheltering '60s activist Abbie
Hoffman when Mr. Hoffman
was a fugitive.
Claiming he can be a suc-
cessful movie producer be-
cause he is Jewish and
smokes cigars, Mr. Friedman
is working on a film version
of A Case of Lone Star. With
$4 million raised and Willie
Nelson part of the cast, he ex-
pects completion in 1994.
Mr. Friedman, currently
linked with Miss Texas of
1987, Jo Thompson, has cast
himself as the star of the film. ❑
