J

estivities were at their
highest as guys 'n gals
brought in 1994 with a
festive bang.
Restaurants and hotels ex-
perienced one of their biggest
booms in a long time with many
people wanting to get out and
bring in the new year on a high-
hopes level ... So much was at
stake for a good year ... peace
being uppermost in many
minds along with continued
good health.
One of the nicest New Year's
celebrations in a
long time was
had by many
who were at
Mario's on Sec-
ond Boulevard,
between Willis
and Canfield.
So many com-
5
munity-ites al-
most "took over"
the place as
waiters hustled
and bustled to
take care of peo-
ple properly ...
not an easy task
on New Year's
Eve.
Mario's was
filled to the brim
as folks literally
jammed at the
door, in the foyer
and front lounge
waiting for 9:30
seating tables to
be emptied by
earlier diners.
It was like a
Jewish wedding
... People were
on the dance floor doing the ho-
rah as Sol Nusbaum, Linden
Nelson's uncle and Harry Nel-
son's brother, spun Norma
Kleiff so much that she landed
on the wood.
Travel gal Gail Shapiro,
Sharon Bidlofsky (Herb), Har-
riet Brummer (Ralph), and Con-
nie Raft (John), let their men sit
while the four lassies danced to-
gether in gala tempo.
The fine Charlie Hill Quar-
tet played songs for dancing ...
pops, Latin, '40s through '80s
tunes, as songstress Michele Si-
mon entertained with a very
pleasant vocal ability.
Al Goldstein started off
the guest vocalizing, followed
by others including Dr. Yvan
Silva, "The Singing Surgeon,"
plus one doing a duet with
Michele ... Phyllis and David
Barr changed partners on the

dance floor ... Jack Glick was
everywhere shooting pictures.
Owners Claudia and Frank
Passalacqua couldn't have
asked for a better send-off for
the new year ... Mario's
jammed in both rooms ... Carl's
Chop House on Grand River
packed in all its rooms ... and
discovery that Claudia was in
her third month.
So many guests that Mario's
ran out of those black and white
fedora-like hats they give out
each year along with the staples

who for years has called her
"Downtown Debbie Brown,"
and a gang whooped it up ...
Two Excalibur seven-passenger
vans were working all night
transporting customers to and
from the jam-packed shindig
with its three table turnovers.
Sultan's on Orchard Lake
Road and 14 Mile gave its cus-
tomers a lot of fun with live-
band dancing and belly dancing
entertainment of Sharifah.
Beside being loaded to the
rafters, Nicky's in the Top of
Troy Building
on W. Big Bea-
ver also had a
band with the
most unusual
name, L'USA,
two guys and
two gals giving
out a lot of mu-
sic for the eve-
ning revelers.

IIE DIDN'T
KNOW wheth-

that gals wear ... Maybe our
waiter didn't know they would
run out but ... he made sure to
get his anyway.
Ritz-Carlton
Dearborn
stopped taking reservations
three days before New Year's
Eve ... It had a complete sellout
of over 500 attendees, the
largest ever, at its gala.
There weren't even any ac-
commodations for Ritz guests
who wanted to stay over but
didn't make advance arrange-
ments ... this was sold out, too
... And the children's party that
usually has about 15 youngsters
set its own record with more
than 30 kids this year.
Marty Wilk brought in the
new year by celebrating birth-
day number 36 at his Excalibur
on Franklin off Northwestern
... It was Debbie Lubowski's
birthday, too, as hubby Steve,

er to laugh or
cry after the
phone call came
from Dr. Fahey
of the City of
Hope Medical
Center in Duar-
te, Calif.
Morrie
Schwartz, own-
er of Morrie's
Sunoco Station
on Southfield
and 10 Mile,
had been diag-
nosed locally as
having bone
marrow cancer
and put on
chemotherapy.
While working the Sophie &
Harry Hoffman Chapter golf
outing at Links of Pinewood, he
met Ted Seisman, City of Hope
administrator, who gave a talk
at the banquet about where the
funds being raised would go.
Morrie's wife, Sara, talked to
Ted, and when the Sunoco sta-
tion operator came in, it was
suggested that he send Ted his
medical records which would be
turned over to one of the lead-
ing doctors there.
Two weeks later, the doctor
called and asked Morrie a few
medical questions ... then said
that something didn't sound
right ... Would he give permis-
sion for him to speak to the doc-
tor treating Morrie?
The recommendation was
made to take him off the
chemotherapy immediately be-
