Call For Cuts In Service Tel Aviv (JTA) — A commis- sion established by the army chief of staff has recom- mended that Israel reduce both the period of com- pulsory military service for men and the period of men's annual reserve duties. The recommendation was based on the premise that the army is now drafting more men than it needs and that the threat of conven- tional warfare facing Israel will remain unchanged, despite the government's current peace initiatives. The commission, headed by Reserve Maj. Gen. Herzl Shafir, said that compulsory military service for men should be shortened by as much as six months, and that reserve service should be cut in half. • If accepted by the Defense Ministry, the recommenda- tions would apply to men drafted by the end of 1996, who would serve 30 to 32 months, instead of three years. Their exact term of service would depend on their unit and training. Army service for women has already been reduced. A decision on the Shafir report is expected within a few months. Israel Teachers Resume Strike Tel Aviv (JTA) — Faculty members at universities throughout Israel resumed their strike last weekend, citing the government's un- willingness to negotiate with them. The strike had begun two weeks ago, but was suspend- ed at some schools after two days on the understanding that the Finance Ministry would resume negotiations on salary and related issues. Many teachers, from in- structors to full professors, had at the time heeded back- to-work orders that were issued by the Tel Aviv Labor Court. But last week, the faculty members announced they would resume their strike, saying the ministry had fail- ed to resume talks. A students association an- nounced Sunday that it would appeal to the Supreme Court to order the professors and lecturers to return to work. But legal experts said it was doubtful that the court would hear the appeal. 8 100 J30 Features: 210 HP V-6, Leather, Dual Airbags, ABS Brakes, CD Player, Security System With Remote Entry, Power Windows, Power Locks, Tilt Steering, Cruise Control, Bose Sound System, FREE SERVICE LOANER AND FREE PICK-UP AND DELIVERY.
